Our focus on deeper learning allows students to explore content beyond the task at hand. We apply standards-based learning to game design activities. That means best practices in education are applied to high interest activities that are creative, engaging, and provide a solid foundation for students to be successful in STEAM learning environments.
Bloom’s Taxonomy serves as the foundation for the Zulama curriculum. Each lesson begins with an Essential Question that focuses on higher order thinking skills.
As students progress through the Zulama curriculum, their ability to think critically and solve problems improves dramatically.

Common Core State Standards
The Common Core State Standards are the result of a collaborative effort by educators, school administrators, and experts in different fields to set more comprehensive, high-level expectations for K-12 education. The rigorous standards align with college level benchmarks, incorporate state standards, and address both application of knowledge and higher-order learning skills.
Zulama focuses on learning outcomes. Our courses address a wide range of the Common Core State Standards, inclusive of reading, writing, math practice and math content (geometry, probability, applications), and literacy skills in history, science, and technology.

21st Century Skills
Developed by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills, the 21st Century Skills focus on a student’s ability to compete in a global environment though content knowledge, critical thinking skills, and technology/media skills. Students proficient in the 21st Century Standards have the tools to excel in innovative environments through collaboration, initiative, and the ability to problem solve. The 21st Century Skills highlight communication as a learning tool for collaboration and refinement of ideas and systems.
Every learning module in the Zulama curriculum is aligned with the 21st Century Skills. Feedback, refinement of a product, and authentic and relevant assessment are the hallmarks of our creative, game-based learning curriculum.

Computer Science Teacher Association Standards
Standards compiled by the Computer Science Teacher Association cover fundamental skills identified as essential for study of the many facets of computer science. Proficiency in these skills prepares students for entry into the work force or college level computer science programs.

Next Generation Science Standards
The Next Generation Science Standards are based on the Framework for K-12 Science Education developed by the National Research Council. The standards address science content and practice across disciples and grades and provide international benchmarks in science education. As a state-led process, the standards represent essential learning outcomes in science, engineering, and design. The NGSS Science and Engineering Practices standards are aligned with each of the Zulama game design courses.

The International Society for Technology in Education has compiled a set of proficiency standards that address skills needed for students to be productive learners in the global learning, digital network. These standards are closely aligned with 21st Century Skills, and inclusive in each of the Zulama courses.

The National Core Arts Standards are developed by the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards. Theses standards utilize an outcome-based approach to teaching and learning in the arts that stems from four artistic processes, eleven anchor standards, and PK-12 performance standards articulated by each of the five arts disciplines. The National Core Art Standards are aligned with each of the Zulama courses.

The Zulama courses include formative and summative assessment tools, such as multiple choice tests and final exams. Playing and designing games helps students meet the standards in a variety of core-subject areas.
More importantly, Zulama relies on authentic assessment as the primary tool to determine growth in students’ critical thinking and intellectual engagement skills. The process of game design increases students’ ability to handle complex strategies and complicated challenges as well as adapt to change.
