Course Description

Do you know what the juvenile justice system is, and how it affects you? Read about cases brought before the United States Supreme Court, and consider how the Court’s rulings influence your daily life.

The course is structured around the Bill of Rights and other Amendments specific to the rights of juveniles. It provides many critical thinking and discussion activities, research assignments, as well as both short answer and multiple choice assessments. 

The content is aligned with the Common Core State Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies.

About the Course Author

Beverly Vaillancourt is a former classroom teacher with over 25 years of experience working with high risk students. She is a published author of history and government texts, and also is a freelance writer of educational materials designed to meet the Common Core State Standards. She serves as a consultant to educators and school districts in the design and implementation of civic education curriculums, with an emphasis on school violence prevention.

She is an avid volunteer with the American Red Cross and serves as an elected official in her local government. Ms. Vaillancourt believes strongly in the civic engagement of students in their communities, and promotes active discussion and knowledge of history and government for all students.

About the Course Author

Jennifer Wilson is an attorney practicing law in Wisconsin. She has worked in various areas of law, including litigation and social services, and is now serving as in-house counsel for a large national corporation. She has always maintained a particular interest in juvenile law and has volunteered her time for programs that promote civic education. In fact, her interest in the law and becoming a lawyer stems from a civics education program in which she participated in high school.
